Pastor Charlie J. Lee Jr. Scholarship Fund
This scholarship honors the memory of Pastor Charlie J. Lee, Jr., who founded Straitway to Heaven Church in August 1992. The church is dedicated to providing community outreach services for those in need. Pastor Lee worked diligently over thirty years in the city of Springfield ministering and helping people. Throughout his life he exhibited tremendous compassion and caring for those who were in need spiritually, physically, and financially by assisting them in any way possible. Through his ministry he was highly regarded in the Springfield community and contributed in many ways to its well-being. Pastor Lee received numerous honors throughout the city of Springfield. Mayor Michael Albano officially proclaimed December 16, 1996, as “Pastor Lee Day” in the city of Springfield, recognizing him as an outstanding leader in the city. The Springfield City Council commended him, acknowledging his many accomplishments and hard work within the city as well as the Springfield Police Department. Further, the street originally known as Hancock Street was renamed “Pastor Lee Place” on July 31, 2002, to honor his instrumental help in the fight against drugs in the community. Pastor Lee helped to make many improvements in the community by standing firm against drugs, violence, and prostitution. He also opened up his church as a designated safe haven for youth and adolescents to keep them out of trouble and provided food and activities for them. He was as a father to some, a counselor and a friend to others. One of his greatest desires during his life was to contribute financially to students who are driven to excel academically but may lack the financial means and family support to do so.
